Paw print with heart on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black paw print tattoo sits on the top of a bare foot, with four toe pads and a larger main pad. The main pad has a small heart shape left as negative space. The skin is pale and the toenails are painted purple, and the foot rests on a grey concrete floor.

Morwen had counted the sheep twice before she noticed the dog was missing from the gate. Mist sat on the Bwlch like wet wool, and the only sound was the beck running loud under its ice. She called Fly by name, then by the whistle she had used since he was a pup, and got nothing but wind coming up the valley.

She found his tracks at the foot of the pass, pressed deep into fresh snow. Four toes and the broad pad behind them, the same shape over and over, heading up towards the saddle where the old drovers' cairn stood. Her knees ached on the climb. Every hundred paces she stopped to listen, and every time the prints kept going.
At the cairn the tracks turned in a tight circle and stopped. Fly sat beside a flat grey stone that someone had set on its edge years before, his tail sweeping slow arcs through the powder. Beneath the stone, where the snow had melted to a darker ring, a shallow dip held a small heart-shaped hollow, the impression of a pad pressed hard into the soil.
She sat down beside him and let the cold come up through her coat. Below them the mist was tearing open over the farm, and she could see the lamps lit in the kitchen window. Fly leaned his whole weight against her shin. "Right then," she said, and got up, and he went ahead of her down the path, stepping exactly in his own prints.
