Paw print with heart on foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black paw print tattoo sits on the top of a bare foot, with four toe pads and a larger main pad. A small heart is left as negative space inside the main pad. The ink is flat black with no shading, and the purple toenails and grey concrete floor are the only other colours in the frame.

Every night after the last tram, a grey dog with one torn ear trotted the length of Saltmarket Row and stopped at the door of the bakery on Quill Street. Mrs Abernethy, who kept the ovens going through the small hours, always left a heel of bread on the step. She never saw the dog eat it. She only saw, each morning, a line of prints pressed into the frost of the yard, four round toes and a larger pad, and inside the pad a small mark shaped like a heart.

The city had a rule that strays were taken to the pound on Canal Street, and a dog without a collar belonged to nobody. Her son Tobias, who swept the tram depot floors at night, said the dog belonged to the river, because it came up out of the water every evening with the mist and went back down before the milk carts. He didn't believe it, but he didn't laugh either. One night in the back end of winter he followed the prints out of the yard, over the wet cobbles, down the steps to the towpath, and along the canal until they stopped at a locked iron gate with a brass plate worn smooth by hands.
The dog was sitting there. It did not run. It looked at Tobias the way a clerk looks at a man who has come to the wrong counter, then turned its head towards the gate and waited. Tobias stood beside it for a long time, listening to the water, until the bells of St Brannoc's struck three and a light came on in a window across the water, and then a second light, and then a dozen more, each one a family waking to a knock that nobody had made.
In the morning there were no prints in the yard. Mrs Abernethy found a fresh heel of bread on the step, untouched, and beside it a single wet print that led away towards the canal, with the small heart pressed into the middle of it, going home.
