Paw print with heart on skin
Black and grey · Photo
A paw print with four toe pads, a large main pad and a small dotted cluster of toe beans, all filled with dark grey ink. The top right toe pad has a white heart left as unshaded skin, and the shading is soft and mottled, with lighter patches within the pads. The paw sits centred on a plain, pale skin background with no other visible detail.

The snow came over the top field on the eve of lambing, and by morning the gate to the high pasture was buried to its top bar. Old Abel Harrow sent his son out with the lantern, and the boy came back without the ewe. He said the dog had gone ahead and that they should follow her marks.

The dog was called Tansy, a grey bitch with one ear that stood and one that didn't. Her prints went up the rise in a line, four toes pressed deep and the big pad at the heel. Where the wind had scoured the ridge she stopped and turned, and the snow there held the shape of her lying down, round and sunk, with a little dip at the top where her head had rested.
Abel walked the line for three hours. He found the ewe in the lee of the wall with her legs folded under her and a new lamb nosing at her side. Beside them lay Tansy, half under a crust of frozen fleece, her muzzle across the lamb's back to keep it warm. She had been there since dusk, and she did not get up when he called her.
They carried the lamb down inside the boy's coat and left the dog where she was until the thaw. In spring Abel found her prints still set in the mud by the gate, and he would not fill them in. Every ewe that lambed after walked past them on her way to the top field, and not one of them ever stepped in the hollow.
