Small black paw print on ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black paw print sits on the side of a foot near the ankle, made of one large main pad and four toe pads. The ink is filled in with no visible shading or fine detail, and the outline is clean against the skin. The image is a close, straight-on photo with the foot filling most of the frame and a bed sheet visible in the background.

Mrs Abernethy at the post office says the light will run itself from a panel in Edinburgh after the autumn equinox, that nobody needs a keeper any more. You don't argue. You wipe the lens on Tuesdays, you oil the clockwork that turns the great lamp, and you carry Bess's tin of biscuits up the ladder in your coat pocket, the way your father did when you were small enough to be carried yourself.
On the last night the gallery rail is furred with salt and the wind comes straight off the Minch. Bess trots round the walkway with her nose down, leaving a row of neat black marks in the crust. You stand with the wrench in your hand and watch them soften as the spray catches up with her, one after another, until only the final print is left, sharp at the edge where she turned back to look at you.
In the morning the man from the lighthouse board will come up the stairs with his clipboard and find that print on the gallery floor. He will have to decide whether to scrub it away. You leave the rag folded on the rail and let the rain take its time.
