Peace like a river handwritten script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the words peace like a river written in a handwritten script on a plain white background. The letters are drawn in black ink with uneven, brushlike strokes, with lowercase forms and some loops and tapered joins. There is no skin, shading or colour apart from the black linework, and the text sits centred in the frame with plenty of empty space around it.

The lock at Hobbs Weir has a sound at night that my predecessor called the sleeping cough, the water sliding under the gates while the rest of the valley lies still. I have kept it nine winters and I still do not settle until the first hour after dusk, when the barges come up off the tide with their lamps turned low and their skippers too tired to talk.

Last November a narrowboat came through with a girl at the tiller who could not have been more than fifteen. Her father was asleep below. When the paddles jammed she did not shout for help. She stood, looked at the gate, then at me, and waited for instruction as if the river had asked her a question. I walked her through the sluice, winding the gear by hand, until the water sank and the boat dropped its eight feet with a groan of timber.

When she cast off she threw me a coil of rope she had no need to throw, and called over the water that her name was Ada. I wrote it in the logbook under the date and the tide height, in the careful hand my mother taught me. Beneath it I added what I always tell anyone who asks how I manage the nights: the water keeps going whether we watch it or not.

In spring the rope was still hanging on my hook, a little frayed at one end. I put the logbook back on its nail and went out to check the gates. The river was high and brown and steady, moving past the lamp as if it had somewhere to be and all the time in the world to get there.
