The sports hall still smelled of floor polish and orange squash, and Maureen Tully had spent twenty minutes hunting for her name badge before she found it stuck to the back of a folding chair, half under a paper plate of sausage rolls. Beneath her printed name, in blue biro, someone had added a line she didn't recognise: let love grow. The handwriting leaned forward as if it were in a hurry, and it took her a moment to place it.

Terry Button had run the school allotment behind the bike sheds in 1979, the only corner of the place where nobody was allowed to shout. He kept a logbook with a cracked green cover, and at the bottom of every page, under the dates and the weights of the marrows, he wrote the same four words. Maureen had been the one who trampled his broad beans the summer she was caught climbing the fence, and he had never once raised his voice to her. He just handed her a trowel and told her to start again on the left side.
She found him at the tea urn, bald now and thinner than she remembered, stirring a cup with a plastic spoon. He looked at the badge in her hand and laughed, a dry, surprised sound. He said he'd sneaked the labels off the printer in the office because nobody else was going to bother with the old ones. He said he had never meant it as a motto. It was just what seeds needed, a bit of light and somebody not in the way.
That evening she sat at her kitchen table with the badge propped against the teapot. She rinsed a yoghurt pot, pushed three sweet pea seeds into the damp compost, and wrote on the side with the same blue biro: let love grow. Then she set it on the windowsill, where the streetlamp would reach it all night.
