The vicar had got through the vows without stumbling, and Nell took it as a fair sign, though her mother said the damp in the church was only fogging his spectacles. Halfway through the register, old Hobb Garrow rose from the back pew with his hat in both hands and asked, as politely as a man asking for salt, whether he might give the bride something before the feast.

Nobody stopped him. Hobb had written letters for half the parish for fifty years, since most of them had never learned their letters properly, and his hand still leaned forward like a man walking into wind. He unfolded a small square of paper gone the colour of weak tea. Across it, in ink that had mostly held, ran the words blessed are the pure in heart.

"Agnes asked me what it meant," he said. "The year we wed. I said I would find out. I walked to the ferry and asked the ferryman. I asked the miller's widow and a travelling preacher who only wanted the price of his supper. Every one gave me a different answer, and every one was wrong, and I was too proud to ask the one person who knew." He looked down at the paper. "Agnes used to say it meant you look at people and see them plain, without keeping a tally against them. It took me a lifetime to learn that from her."

Hobb sat down before anyone could thank him, and the fiddler, who had been waiting all afternoon for a signal, began a slow reel. Nell folded the paper once more and tucked it into her glove, against the palm, where it would stay warm the whole long night.
