Peace sign hand with Beatles badges on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A greyscale hand forms a peace sign, with its knuckles and creases shaded in fine detail. Two round badges with pink and purple tones sit beside the fingers, one showing THE BEA and the other TLE. The shading is smooth and realistic, and the tattoo fills the centre of a forearm photographed against a dark background.

The rain had found the gap under the awning by eleven, so Maureen moved the biscuit tin of badges onto an upturned fish crate and wiped each one on her cardigan sleeve. Their pictures had gone soft at the edges, but the lettering still caught the light and made people bend down to look.

Dennis from the veg stall had been eyeing them since opening. He wanted a pair for his sister's birthday, he said, though he kept squinting at the price card without his glasses. 'They're not sold as a pair,' Maureen told him. 'My husband bought them off a lad outside the ballroom the week before the place shut, and he never once took them off his coat.' Dennis laughed, sure she was making it up. That was fair. She had been making things up from this stall for thirty years, and most of it had sold.
He offered a fiver. She didn't take it. Instead she asked him to hold up his hand, and he did, a little embarrassed, two fingers spread against the grey sky while the rain ran off his knuckles. Maureen studied the creases of his palm the way her mother used to read tea leaves. 'That'll do,' she said. 'Peace is hard enough to find on a wet Thursday.' She took his fiver after all, then slipped the second badge into his coat pocket without another word.
The rain kept on through the afternoon. Maureen counted the tin twice, found one badge short of what the ledger said, and let the ledger be wrong.
