The snow had shut the pass for three days when the two carters came down the stair of the Crooked Hen, each with a hand on his knife. Nobody in Hallow Cross could remember why the Brennan and Vosk families no longer spoke. Mother Ade, who kept the inn, only knew that they had been sleeping on opposite benches since the Tuesday, and that the fire was costing her a cord of wood a night.

On the third evening her grandson Tam came in from the yard stamping his boots, his cheeks red, and asked for chalk. He had been out on the frozen millpond and had seen, scratched into the ice by a fox or a skater, a ring with three lines running out from its heart like the spokes of a wheel that had never been finished. He wanted to draw it on the shutter, he said, so the men would have something to look at besides each other.

Mother Ade told him to use the soft white chalk from the cellar, the kind meant for marking casks. He drew the circle on the inside of the window glass, breathing on it first to wet the surface, then three lines, one straight up and two splayed down. By morning the frost had taken the mark into the pane, thin and clean, and no amount of rubbing would shift it.

When the thaw came the carters found the shape still on the glass and argued over whose turn it was to ask the other to leave. Neither did. They walked down the road together to the bridge, and the Brennan boy and the Vosk girl were married the next autumn under that same window. The mark is still there. Ask at the Crooked Hen and they will show you where the frost lines up with the morning sun.
