Peace symbol with splatter on the ribs
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A bold black peace sign sits at the centre of the design, with black ink lines radiating outwards and tendrils reaching up from the symbol. Green, red and orange splatters spread around it, fading softly into the skin at the edges. The tattoo is placed on the side of the torso, shown in a close, slightly angled photograph with light clothing at the top and trousers at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Marguerite,

The van is still parked outside the allotment gate, and I've decided I am not scraping the paint off the bumper until you've seen what happened on Saturday. We were doing the banner for the Easter march, black on cream calico, the circle first with the compass Dad lent me. Then Pete knocked the tin of green over my boot and I swore loud enough to bring the vicar out of the chapel.
The circle went on fine. Mostly. I'd laid down the two long strokes and the little arms, and I was pulling the ink out in those thin lines that look like they're running off the edge of the world, when the green hit the cloth and the red came after it. Pete said leave it, it's a splash, the whole point is the mess. So I flicked the brush at the bottom of the sheet and watched the colours bleed into the weave, orange where the sun had got to it, while the black ran up out of the circle in threads like something trying to climb.
Pete thinks it looks like a bomb going off in a garden. I think it looks like the first ten seconds of a good argument. The marchers can decide on Friday. I've hung it over the bench to dry, and this morning the light through the shed window caught it so the green looked wet.
Love, Nell
