Peach with leaf tattoo

Realism · Colour · Photo

A ripe peach with a curved stem and a green leaf beeswaxed with small water droplets sits on the skin. The peach is shaded with soft gradients from magenta-red at the edges to yellow and orange in the centre, with fine detail on the leaf veins and highlights. A silver coin rests at the top left of the frame to show scale, and the design is centred against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had been told the peach tree would not survive the wet spring, and he had said nothing, only carried buckets from the cistern along the south wall each morning before Lauds. The tree had been planted by a prior who died before it fruited, and for forty years it had given nothing but leaves. Now, in the last week of August, the lowest branch bent under a single fruit the colour of a sunrise seen through cloud.

Abbot Thomas came down the gravel path with his hands folded inside his sleeves. He did not look at the tree. He looked at the wall, where the mortar had cracked and the lichen was spreading. "The cellarer wants it picked," he said. "For the infirmary, if it is fit."

Anselm said it was not ready. It was still firm at the shoulder, and the red had only just crept in from the seam. The old herbal in the library said to wait until the flesh gave under the thumb. The abbot said the herbal was four hundred years old and the tree was not. Then he went back up the path, and Anselm stood beneath the branch while rain beaded on the leaf.

He waited two more days. On the third morning the peach had softened, and when he lifted it the stalk came away clean. He carried it to the infirmary on a folded cloth, and the old infirmarian bit into it and laughed, juice running into the grey of his beard. That evening Anselm found the cistern full, though he had emptied it at dawn. He did not ask who had filled it.
