Peach with leaves on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A peach with a red-brown stem and two serrated green leaves is outlined in bold black linework. The fruit is shaded from yellow at the edges to deep red-orange at the centre, giving it a rounded, dimensional look. The design sits centrally on a strip of skin against a dark background, with the stem and leaves extending above the fruit.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been sent to the orchard on the far side of the Salt Marsh, where King Osric keeps the last tree that still bears peaches. Everyone in the kingdom of Harrowmere has forgotten what a peach tastes like, which is why the king has decreed that only the one fruit may ever ripen, and only for the Midsummer feast. The gatekeeper, a thin woman called Mother Ash, unlocks the iron gate and tells you to mind the wasps. You tell her you have come for the fruit that was promised to your grandmother. She laughs, though not unkindly, and points you toward the tree.

The peach hangs low on a branch the colour of old copper, two serrated leaves rising beside it like a pair of cupped hands. It is smaller than you expected and it glows from the inside, yellow at its rim and deep red where the sun has lain longest. You reach for it and the branch does not move, so you stand there with your palm open until you understand. The tree wants a story before it will let go. Not a boast, not a lie, but something true that you have never said aloud.

So you tell it about the winter your brother walked across the frozen mere to fetch the midwife, and how you waited by the hearth counting the bread knife's notches, and how he came back with his boots full of ice and a single peach wrapped in linen, though neither of you ever learned where he had found it. The tree shivers. The leaves turn their pale undersides to the light. When you take the fruit it comes away warm, and you carry it home through the reeds without once looking back.
