Small pineapple tattoo beside a quarter

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a pineapple with a spiky green crown and a yellow-orange body. Black outlines define the leaves and the diamond pattern of the skin, and the fill is flat with light shading. A US quarter sits beside it to show the tattoo's size, which is roughly the coin's height.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pineapple was meant to be the centrepiece, and by half past four it had been carried to three different tables and rejected from each. Aunt Maureen said it looked like a hand grenade. Dot's father said the yellow was wrong for a September marquee. I was the one holding it, because I had the steadiest hands in the family and the least say in anything.

Dot settled it by digging a quarter out of the jar on the hall windowsill, the one her grandfather had filled with American coins from his years on the Norfolk ferry. She set the coin down beside the fruit on the trestle and declared that the pineapple would stay exactly that size, no bigger and no smaller, with Gramps standing guard in the form of Washington's profile. Nobody argued with a quarter. It was hard to argue with something so small and so certain of itself.

So the pineapple went on the table by the door, where guests came in out of the drizzle and stopped to touch its crown. Maureen wiped her eyes twice and blamed the rain. Marcus, who had never met Gramps, asked what the coin was for, and Dot said it was the only thing in the room that had been to Hawaii without anybody buying it a ticket.

At the end of the night I found the quarter back in the jar on the windowsill, and the pineapple still on the table, untouched and faintly sweating under the fairy lights. Nobody had dared to cut it. Dot said that was the point of a centrepiece, and I didn't have the heart to tell her it had been a plastic one all along.
