The tattoo shows an apple outline with a pointed leaf on a short stem, and a curl of line near the base of the apple. By the last week of August the Ellery orchard has stopped pretending it wants to be picked. You walk the rows with the wooden crate knocking against your hip, and the windfalls split under your boots, sweet and going brown at the edges. Your uncle says the wasps know more about the harvest than the council does.

The old Cox at the end of row seven is the last tree he will not let anyone shake. He wants the high ones taken by hand, so you climb the ladder with the canvas bag buckled across your chest and turn each apple a quarter, the way you were taught, so the stalk comes away clean and the spur survives for next year. Near the top you find one apple half in the sun, its stalk bent over like a question. You don't pick it.

Instead you sit on the top rung, take the pencil stub from your shirt pocket, and draw on the back of a seed invoice: a round shape, a pointed leaf, the short stem, and the single loose curl at the base where the wind has been turning the fruit all summer. Below, your uncle is calling that the press will be ready by four. You hear him through the leaves and let him call twice more before you answer.

When you come down he looks at the paper, then at the tree, and says nothing, which is how he says most things. He folds the invoice into the ledger between the other years, and you take the apple after all, bite into it in the shade, and the juice runs warm and sharp down the back of your hand while the wasps argue over the crate.
