Red apple with leaves on upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a red apple with a dark purple shadow side and a stalk with three leaves, one pink-tinted and two green. The shapes are bold and flat with simple blocky shading rather than fine detail. The left photo is a close view of the skin, and the right photo shows the wearer from behind with long dark hair, with the apple placed centrally on the upper back.

The frost had taken every apple from the Harrow orchard except one, high on the old tree at the top of the hill. Mother Idle would not let the boys climb for it. The tree was older than the cottage, she said, and the apple belonged to the tree, and the tree would let go of it when it was ready.

In February a pedlar came up the lane with a cart of salt and a limp he pretended not to have. He asked for a bed by the fire and got one. In the morning he stood under the bare branches and looked up at the red thing that had not fallen. "That one is worth more than your salt," Mother Idle said. "Then I'll pay you in salt," he said, "and you'll pay me in the apple, and we'll both be cheated only a little." She laughed and climbed the ladder herself while the boys held its feet and quarrelled about who would be blamed. The apple came away in her hand with a sound like a door closing softly. Half of it was bright as a cut cherry. The other half had gone dark as a plum left out in the sun, and she turned that side away from the pedlar, and he did not look at it.
He took the apple, bit nothing, and set it on the kitchen windowsill. Every morning the boys checked it, and every morning the stalk had three leaves, one blushing pink at the edge, though nobody had seen them grow. On the fourth day the pedlar was gone, the cart with him, and the apple had shrunk to a hard red stone with a single pip rattling loose inside its skin.
Mother Idle planted the pip by the gatepost when the thaw came. Nobody remembers who first saw the tree blossom pink. They only know that by the next autumn the boys had stopped asking about the pedlar and started asking when they were allowed to climb.
