Peachy script tattoo on the buttock
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small script word tattoo, reading Peachy, placed on the upper buttock where it meets the top of the thigh. The lettering is dark black ink with a smooth, flowing stroke and some slight shading. A hand hooks the waistband of worn, frayed denim shorts beside it, and the background is plain white.

You have the brush loaded before the lorry's engine ticks itself cool on the quay, because Ada Penhallow's fruit van has come in early again and the gulls are already working the open crates. She wants her stall's name in gold leaf on the side panel before Saturday market. You tell her script needs a full day to cure properly. She tells you she has heard that from every sign-painter between here and Falmouth.

Your hand is steady from forty years of lettering hulls, hoardings and the tide-board at the lifeboat house. You rule a faint pencil baseline, then paint the word in one long swing, the loops thin at the top and fat where the brush rests. Ada reads it upside down from the step and says it isn't her name. You say no, it's what the customers will call her once they've bitten into the first one. She laughs and says the fruit came from a container that smelled of diesel, and she'd rather the stall advertised something that had ripened by the sea.
At noon she hands you the last peach from the crate, a bruised one nobody would pay for. You cut it on the tailgate with your penknife and split it between you, juice running down your wrist onto the wet paint. By evening the sign has dried in the sun. In the morning the bottom loop of the P has been pecked clean by a gull, and Ada stands there with her coffee, shrugs, and says leave it, it looks like the gull was in on the joke.
