Peacock feather on the back of the neck
Realism · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A single peacock feather runs vertically down the back of the neck, with a teal and blue eye at the top and a tapering black shaft. The feather is shaded with green and blue tones that give it depth, and the dark tail fades to a fine point against pale skin. The composition is centred, with hair visible at the top of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, the kettle's only just gone off. You'll want the chair by the window, the one with the sprung seat, because this is a long one and my knees won't let me stand for it. Mrs Pargeter kept the Bellevue on the front at Cromer for forty years, and she never once let a guest take a peacock feather up to their room.

Why? Because of the Fenwick girl, that's why. Summer of 1931 she came down with a case and a tin of watercolours, and she painted the sea every morning from the end of the pier. She had a feather tucked in her hatband, long and green as a bottle, and she said the eye in it could see the weather coming. Every evening she'd hold it up to the lamp and tell the landlady what the morning would bring. She was right six days in seven.
On the last Saturday of August the glass dropped in the night and the feather went grey at the tip. Mrs Pargeter said it was damp. The girl said it was the eye closing. She went down to the pier at dawn with her easel and never came back up the steps. They found the tin of paints on the bottom step, the lids still on, and the feather laid across them, eye turned to the water.
Mrs Pargeter put it in a frame over the mantel, and that's where it hung until the bombs took the roof off. Some say the eye still blinks when the wind swings round to the east. Drink your tea. If the weather turns tonight, don't go out past the pier, and look at the feather on the wall before you do.
