Peacock feather tattoo on the ankle

Realism · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A large peacock feather fills the lower leg and ankle, with its eye at the centre in teal, blue and brown. The long green barbs are drawn with dark outlines and fine strands, with soft shading that gives the feather depth. The ink is set against bare skin on a plain background, with the feather's tip curving down towards the foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The signalman's wife at Hollin Cross kept a peacock because the old one at the big house had gone lame and nobody else wanted him. He strutted the platform every morning before the milk train, scolding the porters, and every morning he dropped a feather or two between the sleepers where the grass grew thick.

Nobody picked them up. Tom Arkwright, who swept the waiting room, said a feather brought bad luck on a line, and the station master agreed, mostly because he was tired of being asked. So the feathers piled up under the bench, long green barbs with their dark eyes looking up at the timetable board.

In November the fog came down so thick the lamps went out by four. The night goods was due, and Tom heard a whistle he did not recognise, low and sweet, coming along the cutting from the wrong direction. He followed it with a lantern and found a girl standing on the rails with one hand out, holding a single feather up against the dark like a signal lamp. She said she had been waiting a long time for someone to pick one up. Tom gathered the feathers from under the bench, one at a time, and handed them to her, and the fog lifted off the line like a sheet.

When the goods train came through on time, the girl was gone, and so was the heap under the bench. The next spring the grass between the sleepers grew tall and green, and the old bird never strutted there again. Tom never swept the waiting room without leaving one feather on the sill for her.
