Realistic eye and feathers on shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A realistic eye with a green iris and long lashes sits on the shoulder, with a cluster of feathers trailing down beneath it. The feathers use fine grey shading and soft highlights, while the eye has detailed reflections and smooth gradients. The image is a close crop of the shoulder against a dark, sparkly top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been at the pigeon loft since before the buzzer, because your brother Sam never trusted the canary the way he trusted the grey hen with the bad left wing. Mrs Carr at number nine says it is unlucky to keep birds that have seen the pit, but you muck out the straw anyway and count the feathers on the sill each morning the way other girls count stitches.

The shift whistle goes at ten to six, and the hen is always the first to know when the cage fills with dust. She stands on her perch with her head turned sideways, one dark eye fixed on the door as though she is reading the lane. Your mother used to say the bird could tell a good shift from a bad one. You never believed her until the morning the hen would not eat, and by dinnertime the whole row had heard about the roof fall at the east level.

You wait at the loft door with your sleeves rolled and the kettle going cold behind you. Sam comes up the lane at seven, slower than he should, his cap pushed back and his lamp dark. He does not say anything. He only lifts one hand and shows you the hen's grey feather pinned to his collar, the quill still wet, and he holds it out to you like a ticket for a train that has already left.

You take it, and you hold it up to the light until the barbs fan out thin and silver, and you think that the bird must have flown straight down the shaft to find him.
