Peacock feather tattoo on a back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A long peacock feather runs diagonally across the skin, with its eye of orange, blue and dark green near the lower left and the fine fronds sweeping up towards the right shoulder. The linework is dark and detailed, with soft shading in the barbs and a fine outline around the eye. The subject lies face down on white towelling, and the warm skin tones contrast with the feather's green and orange.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The steward of Ysmere pressed the bundle into your hands at the kitchen door and said the queen wanted the peacock's eye before the first frost came down off the Harrowmere hills. Eleven years you had peeled onions for the court, and nobody had ever trusted you with anything heavier than a tray of bread. You tucked the feather flat against your ribs, its long fronds brushing your coat like slow breath, and you walked north.

The road ran through salt marsh and reed beds where herons stood like folded umbrellas. Each night you unrolled the green silk and looked at the eye: a ring of burnt orange, a dark green border, and a blue centre that seemed to swim when you tilted it toward the lamp. At the ferry a boatwoman named Ilse Corran watched you pay and asked what you were carrying. A letter, you said. She laughed. Letters, she said, do not look back at you.

At Harrowmere the guards took the feather up the tower stair, and a chamberlain led you to a room with one window and one chair. The queen never came. Instead the Lady of Ysmere sat behind a screen of pierced brass and asked what the bird had seen on its journey. You had nothing to offer but the marsh, the herons, the boatwoman, and the way the eye had seemed to watch you sleep.

When the chamberlain returned with a purse of gold, you asked for one thing: to climb the hill behind the tower. At the top the wind came off the frozen moor with the smell of snow. You unfolded the feather and lifted it high. The fronds rose and swept northward like a gull taking the air, and the eye turned once toward the marsh before the wind carried it over the reeds and out of sight. The coins in your pocket felt suddenly light, and you went down the hill without them.
