Peacock feather on upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A single peacock feather runs diagonally across the skin, with its eye spot at the upper left and the long barbs sweeping down to the lower right. The eye is shaded with blue, teal, green and orange, while the barbs are drawn as fine olive and grey lines with light shading. Colour is concentrated in the eye and the fringe, and the pale skin around the design sets it off clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wasps had got into the windfalls by the time Nell reached the bottom row, and the Discovery trees were dropping their last fruit onto the grass with a sound like someone knocking to be let in. Her brother Tom was up the ladder shouting numbers at her. She ignored him, because the wire netting along the hedge had snagged something that was not a bag or a glove.

It was a feather, longer than her forearm, and it had come off a bird that did not belong to anyone in Lower Ashcombe. Mr Pryce at the Hall kept three peacocks and complained about them to everyone who would listen. The one that had gone missing in June had been seen crossing the lane at dusk and never seen again. Nell held the barbs up to the light. Olive threads ran down the shaft like rain on a window, and near the top the eye opened wide, orange ringed round a green well, and at its heart a blue so deep it looked wet.

She meant to take it up to the Hall and claim the reward, which was two shillings according to the notice on the church door. Instead she carried it up the orchard path as far as the gate, where her mother was stacking crates in the shade. "Put that down, you'll snap the quill," her mother said, and then, after a long look, "Pryce never did know which of his birds was which."

Nell walked to the Hall at dusk anyway. When Mr Pryce opened the door she told him she had found a feather in the orchard, which was true, and that she had not seen the bird, which was also true. He turned the feather over in the porch light and said the creature would be moulting and scraggy in someone's hedge by now, not worth the walk. She could keep it. That night she laid it on the windowsill, where the lamp could still find the eye, and it stayed open until morning.
