Peacock tattoo running down a leg
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A woman's leg, cropped at the hip and ankle, shows a peacock tattoo. The bird's head and upper feathers on the outer thigh are shaded in blue, while the long tail feathers and swirling plumes run in black linework down to the calf. The subject is posed against a red background, with black high-heeled shoes visible at the bottom of the frame.

The peacock had come aboard at Tilbury in a crate marked for the wrong port, and by the third day out the whole crew agreed he was bad luck. Bosun Haskett swore he heard the bird laughing at the pumps. Nobody could say who had bought him. The cook fed him biscuit soaked in tea, and he followed the boy Tobias along the rail like a dog, dragging a tail that caught on every coil of rope.

On the ninth night the glass dropped and the swell came up out of the south-west. Tobias went aft to lash the hatch covers and found the bird standing on the wheel housing, neck the colour of a bruise in the lamplight, his tail spread wide against the black sky as though he meant to answer the lightning. Tobias shouted at him. The peacock did not move. Each flash lit the feathers, and every eye on them seemed to open at once.
The hatch held. By morning the sea had gone flat and grey, and the bird was on the forecastle picking at a biscuit as if nothing had happened. Haskett came up with his pipe, looked at him for a long while, and then took off his cap, which Tobias had never seen him do for anything but a funeral.
At Calcutta the purser's wife came down the gangway to claim her bird, and the crew watched her reach for the crate. Solomon walked past it, down the plank and into the crowd on the quay, his tail trailing a line of dust behind him, and nobody thought to stop him. Tobias kept one blue feather from the wheel housing, though he never afterwards told anyone it had been that colour at the root.
