Pencil sketch of two hands forming a heart
Black and grey · Flash
A loose pencil sketch shows two outlined hands curving together to form the shape of a heart, with small shading marks along the knuckles and fingers. The linework is soft and uneven, with no solid fills, and the drawing sits on plain cream paper. A black pen lies diagonally across the top right corner of the frame.

Sit closer, and mind the cat, she has claimed the warm end of the bench since Candlemas. You want the tale of Brother Aldous and the goose? Then hold your tongue and watch my hands, for at Saint Ywain's the brothers kept silence from compline to terce, and everything they meant had to be shaped in the air.

Aldous and Brother Tobias had not exchanged a kind sign in eleven years. Tobias kept the bees and Aldous kept the kitchen garden, and every autumn the bees got into the cabbages and every spring the cabbages got into the honey. By the second winter of the great snow they were signing insults so fine that the novices learned their first curses by watching them across the refectory. The abbot, a man with a voice like a dropped barrel, let them be, because the snow kept everyone indoors and nobody could walk to the next village to complain.
Then the thaw came early, and Tobias's hives were drowned in one night of rain. He stood at the gate with his hood dripping and could not make a single sign that did not sound like grievance. Aldous came out with a lantern and a basket of bread, set it down, and did not look up. He lifted both hands, curled the fingers, and pressed the edges of the palms together until they made a heart in the air, slow and uneven, the way a man draws when his hands are cold.
Tobias had not seen that shape since they were boys learning their letters side by side. It meant the thing that had been waiting between them all along. He did not answer it with words, for there were none allowed. He simply took the bread, and the two of them stood there until the lantern burned down, two pairs of hands gone still in the dark.
