Pentacle with vines and daisies
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pentacle formed of interlaced ribbon-like strands sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by vines, leaves and five-petalled daisies. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the lower section breaks into curling tendrils and scrolls. The drawing is in black ink on a cream background, with the design centred and filling most of the frame.

Sit yourself down on that step, the bus won't come before the heat breaks, so you may as well hear about the daisy woman while the lizards make up their minds. Out past Cuthbert's Wells, where the road gives up being a road and becomes a rumour of tyre tracks, there was a widow named Hester Vane who kept a filling station with one pump and a ledger nobody else could read.

Every spring the dry wash behind her fence sent up a green thread, and by May the thread had become vines that climbed her chain link and the broken windmill. Hester never cut them. She took a length of faded red ribbon from the lost property box and wove a five-pointed star on her kitchen table, one loop passing under, then over, the next, until it held its shape without her hands. She pinned it to the fence post and let the vines find it.
Drivers thought she was a witch, which she said was cheaper than being a saint. A lorry man from Lincoln stopped one August, when the air shook off the tarmac, and asked why every flower on her fence had five petals and all of them faced the road. Hester said the daisies were only counting the cars. He laughed, bought a bottle of water he did not need, and she watched him drive off with a loop of ribbon tucked behind his mirror.
The vines stayed inside her fence after that, and nobody on this road has settled whether it was luck or a bargain. Look east at dusk and you will see a thin green thread running along the verge towards Lincoln, pricked here and there with white daisies. Somebody is still counting the cars.
