Pentagram and sun tattoo on a shoulder
Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black tattoo of a five-pointed star enclosed in a ring, surrounded by pointed rays that resemble a sun. The linework is solid and even, with no grey shading. The photo is taken from behind and shows the upper back and shoulder against a plain, pale wall, with the tattoo placed at the centre of the frame.

The paint is still tacky when you reach the slip, and Dorrie Halse is already cursing the gull that landed on the transom an hour ago. 'Leave it,' she says. 'Gulls know a sun when they see one.' You do not tell her you have been up since four, scraping the old mark off the Mary Ann with a shard of glass, because the new one has to be cut square to the ring or the fog won't respect it.

Every boat in Pell Harbour carries the same sign, a star inside a circle with rays spiking out like a child's drawing of noon. Your grandfather said it kept the drowned men from knocking. Your mother said it kept the council inspector from asking questions. You never asked which one was true, and now there is no one left to tell you.
Halse hands you the brush. The rays are the hard part. Each one must taper to a point, the same length as the one opposite, and you must not lift until the stroke is finished, or the charm goes thin. You work with your tongue between your teeth while the tide turns under the hull and the bell buoy off the breakwater starts its slow complaint.
When you finish, the star sits dead centre on the bow, black as a hole cut in the morning. Halse runs a thumb across one ray and nods once. Out past the mole the fog is already lifting off the water, and for the first time in a fortnight the harbour looks like somewhere a boat might come home to.
