Red pentagram sun on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A bold tattoo of a five-pointed star within a ring, surrounded by wavy, flame-like rays that radiate outward like a sun. The lines are solid and the shapes are filled in a single shade of red, with subtle variation that suggests a slightly raised or glossy finish. The emblem sits centred on the upper back, with the edge of the shoulder blade and a necklace chain visible around it.

Dear Tom,

The new stationmaster at Halsey Cross has had the wind chart painted over, and in its place is a red sun on the signal box door: a ring with a star inside it and flames all the way round, like a child's drawing of morning. Mrs Okonedo at the parcels office says it was her grandmother's mark, painted on the goods sheds in Lagos to keep the rain off the crates. I told her rain doesn't read. She laughed and said neither do the inspectors, which is why it works.

Things have been slow since the timetable changed. Only the 6.10 stops now, and the platform gulls have learned the sound of the bell. Father says the red will fade by the autumn, bleached like everything else out here, but last night I went out with the lamp and the paint still looked wet, shining where the varnish caught it, as though it had been done that morning and the flames might lift off the board and walk down the platform.

I didn't mention that to anyone. I stood beneath it until the 11.40 came through without stopping, its windows lit like a row of small kitchens, and a woman's hand lifted at one of them. I lifted mine. Then the sun over the door took the last of the lamplight and held it, the way you cup a match in the wind to keep it going.

Write soon. Tell me whether the sea at Scarborough is as cold as they said.

Yours, Ada
