Pentagram with oak leaves and acorns
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a lavender pentagram threaded through green oak leaves, with yellow and red acorns and curling black-outlined scrolls. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading under the leaves and along the scrolls. The design is centred in the frame against plain, lightly toned skin.

Brother Anselm had been counting acorns since Lauds, and every time the total came out one short. He knelt on the wet flags of the cloister walk with his sleeves pushed up, sorting them into the wooden tray by colour, because the old abbot had insisted the yellow-capped ones were sound and the red-capped ones were not, and nobody had ever dared ask why. The great oak in the infirmary garden had dropped more than usual that autumn, its leaves going the green of old copper before they fell.

Behind him the abbey bell gave the half hour, and he thought of the chapter-house door, where a mason long dead had cut a five-pointed star into the oak lintel, then, beside it, a scroll that curled back on itself like a fern. Brother Gerald said it was a mason's mark. Brother Gerald said a great many things before breakfast. Anselm had once measured the star with a knotted cord and found each point struck at exactly the angle a falling acorn makes when it lands on its cap.
He carried the tray to the orchard wall and dug a shallow trench, following the lines he had drawn in the mud with a stick. Five points, five stations, the acorns set one by one into the dark soil, each dropped where the wind had been pushing the leaves all week. Rain came in off the fells before he finished, flattening his habit against his shins.
In April the seedlings broke through in five little clusters joined by a thread of green. The novice who came to weed them asked who had planned the bed. Anselm told him the ground had, and that he had only been listening.
