The barge Mercy Ann went up the Thames at Brentford every spring with a cargo of seed and a box of cuttings, and in the year the frost came early the bargeman's wife, Hetty Crane, would not let her husband leave until he had cut her a bunch of blooms from the bank by the lock. He grumbled, but he took his knife and a sack and walked the towpath to where the wild roses leaned over the water, and beyond them the meadow sweet and the bracken already uncurling its fronds like the heads of ferns in a book.

He came back with his hands scratched and his sack heavy, and when he tipped it onto the cabin table there were roses the size of a child's fist, a pale peony gone soft at the edges, daisies with yellow eyes, and sprigs of fern that smelled of rain. Hetty laid them out in a row along the brass rail, turning each one until it faced the light. The lock keeper's boy came aboard to ask what the commotion was, and went away again without asking anything more.
They left on the morning tide with the flowers still on the rail. By the time the barge reached Richmond the roses had dropped their outer petals and the peony had bowed its head, but the fern had kept its shape, so Hetty pressed a single frond between the pages of the ledger. Years later the ledger sat on a shelf in a house in Kew, and nobody opened it except to check the dates, and the fern was still there, flat and faint and perfectly drawn.
