The ferryman at Hollin Reach had a rule that nobody crossed the grey water carrying a name they had not earned. So when the girl came down the shingle with her father's coat over her arm and the word PERFECTLY stitched on its collar in gold thread, he only looked at her a long while and then pointed at the boat.

She had made the thread herself, she told him, spinning it from the fleece of the salt sheep that grazed the cliff above the old lighthouse. It had taken three winters. The gold came from a broken clock her mother had hammered flat. Everything in the village was mended, and everything mended showed where it had been mended, and her father had said that was the whole joy of a made thing: you could read its history on it like a book left open.
The ferryman rowed. Halfway over, the water went still as a dish and he asked her what the other word was for, the one that sat on the ribbon below. She said it was the word her father used for himself when he came home from the sea with a torn sleeve and a catch of nothing, and laughed, and she laughed too.
On the far bank she stepped out and turned the coat so the collar caught the light. The ferryman saw the gold letters flare, then the smaller word beneath them, and he nodded once, the way a man nods at a knot that holds.
