Infinity symbol with birds on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a shoulder and upper back with a fine line tattoo of an infinity symbol. Three small birds in flight sit on the upper loop, and a cursive word is written along the lower loop. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, set against plain skin and a dark strap at the top edge of the frame.

Sit down, you, and mind the wet bench. Right, the Thornleigh junction, the one with the iron canopy that dripped on the platform all winter. Mrs Agnes Pardoe ran the buffet there for thirty-one years, and every spring three house martins came back to the girders above her urn. The same three, she swore, because one of them had a torn left wing.

The year the line was to close, the company men came up with a letter and a sealed tin of plans. Agnes read the letter standing, then sat down on a crate of tinned peaches and would not get up. Her son Wilf had gone down the pit at fourteen and never written back. She told anyone who would listen that she had one word left to send him, and the post office in Harrogate would take it for a penny if she wrote it small enough.
So she wrote always on the back of a spare timetable, then ran a line round it the way the old signal wire ran, a figure of eight lying on its side. The martins had gone south by then. But on the morning the last train stood waiting, three birds came down off the girders and settled on the wire where she had pinned the card, as if they had read it. The guard swore he saw them twice more that week.
Wilf came up on the last Sunday with his cap in his hands. He never said a word about the card. He just stood by the urn while the whistle blew, and the birds lifted and wheeled over the platform, round and round, never quite leaving the loop of it.
