Black and white ink flash design of a perfume atomiser, lipstick and hand-lettered text reading Let me get my girly shit, with small heart labels.

Perfume atomiser, lipstick and lettering flash

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing on a pale background shows a perfume atomiser with a spray plume and a rubber bulb, an open-ended lipstick, and a small tube beside it. The phrase Let me get my girly shit is written in loose hand lettering around the objects, with small hearts labelled MISS, CREEP and CAKE and a row of tiny hearts at the end. The linework is even and uses no shading, so the design is entirely black and white.

"Put the lid back on, Gordon," Marnie said, without looking up from the compact mirror she had propped against the window. The coach had been stuck in a lay-by outside Tonopah for three hours, the air conditioning had given up somewhere around the second, and her bag sat open on the seat beside her like a small, cross animal. Inside it were a lipstick with its cap lost, a scent bottle with a rubber bulb, and a tube of concealer that had survived two divorces and a flood.

Gordon had been sitting in the seat across the aisle since Beatty, and nobody had asked him to. He turned the atomiser over in his big hands as if it were a part he might fix. "Smells like a bakery," he said. "Cake, that's what that is."

She took it back, gave the bulb one firm squeeze, and a sweet cloud hung in the heat between them. "It smells like a woman who would like four hundred miles of silence, Gordon, and I'm sure you'd like it too." She dabbed on a red that the sun had already started to fade, then pressed her lips together and looked at him properly for the first time. "Miss, if you don't mind. Not Gordon. Not dear."

The replacement coach pulled in at dusk with its headlights already burning. Marnie stood, tucked the lipstick into her pocket and left the atomiser on Gordon's seat, its bulb still swollen with the last of the scent. Let him sit in it. The road ahead was long and nobody on it was going to call her anything she hadn't chosen.
