Hand-lettered phrase on kraft paper

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing of a hand-lettered phrase in black ink on a tan, textured paper background. The letters mix a flowing script with decorative serifs, with the word Fucking set larger than the rest of the text. The black linework is even and the composition is simple, with the phrase set diagonally across the upper half of the sheet.

"He wants a bridge built across the moat," said Master Orrin, unrolling the parchment with two fingers. "Made of cheese. For the swans."

I looked up at the sky, which was the colour of wet slate over the battlements. "Tell the Duke the swans have been fed perfectly well on bread."

Orrin cleared his throat. "Sir Peregrine adds that the King has agreed. The order is signed. It bears the royal thumbprint, in wax, and the thumb is rather large."

For a moment neither of us spoke. Then I stood, shook the crumbs from my tunic, and said what every clerk in Harrowmere had been muttering under their breath for six years: "You've got to be bloody kidding me." The cheese bridge was finished by midsummer. The swans, I am told, refused to cross it, and the King has since declared the moat a lake of great sorrow and ordered it drained. My ink is still on my cuffs.
