Perfume bottle and mirror on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a perfume atomiser bottle with a pale yellow and pink glass body, a looped string of pearls, a red lipstick, a dark red compact and a powder puff, all framed by an ornate grey mirror with a scrolled top. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading on the bottle and mirror and a light wash of pastel colour. The design fills the upper arm and extends toward the shoulder, with the subject cropped so no face is visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the boarding house at Gullwell, on the cold end of the front, there was one room with a looking glass that showed the sea no matter which way you stood. Mrs Pargeter kept it covered with a sheet from October to Easter, because the lodgers would not stop staring into it. The glass had come off a wreck, people said, along with a pale yellow bottle of scent that nobody ever opened.

Dolly Ashe, who scrubbed the stairs for her keep, found the bottle wrapped in oilcloth under the floorboards the spring she turned fifteen. She dabbed a little behind her ears before she knew better. That evening a loop of pearls lay on the windowsill as though someone had set it down with care, and in the dark she heard a lipstick case click open.

She carried the bottle to the mirror and asked it what it wanted. The glass said nothing, but the powder puff rolled off the dresser and stopped at her feet, so she understood she was to go down to the sands at low tide. She went with the bottle in one pocket, the red lipstick in the other and the compact under her arm. On the wet sand she unscrewed the cap, and the scent rose white over the water. The sea, which had taken three boats that winter, went quiet.

Mrs Pargeter never forgave her for the torn sheet or the missing stair brass. But the glass on the landing showed only the face of whoever stood before it from then on, and the lodgers stopped asking for the room with the view.
