The piano in the back room of the Gilded Lamp had been tuned by nobody since the war, and Marguerite Vance swore it was the only honest thing on Tallow Street. Every night at eleven the hotel's night porter, a man called Dunmore with a cough like a dropped tin tray, would carry the sheet music down from the attic and drop it on the stand without looking at it. Nobody asked for songs. They asked for the old ones, the ones with the blue notes that made the brass boys in the corner go quiet.

The night the rain came through the skylight, the pages lifted off the stand and stuck to the ceiling like wet paper moths. Marguerite stood under them with a cigarette going out between her fingers and watched the ink run into the plaster. The keys were still warm from her hand. She played a single chord, low, and the sheet music settled a little, as if it had heard its name.
She never found out who had left the rose on the lid that morning, a blue one, pressed flat and cold. She kept it in the drawer with the receipts. When the hotel was sold in the spring, the new owner ripped the plaster down and found the notes still there underneath, pale and perfect, climbing the wall toward a window nobody had ever thought to open.
