Traditional-style colour tattoo on a thigh showing a pig, a cow and a hen above the words 'My body will not be a tomb for other creatures', framed by flowers.

Pig, cow and hen heads with lettering on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows three animal heads, a pig, a cow and a hen, arranged side by side with the cow in front, above a red shaded background. Black outlines and shading define the fur, feathers and eyes, with orange, grey and red used for colour. Two lines of black lettering sit above and below the animals, and small red and orange flowers with green leaves frame the design on a bare upper thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the red chalk in her apron pocket when the lorry turned into Marsh Lane, and she was still holding it when she reached the top gate. Behind her the hens were already muttering in the coop, the way they did before weather, and Tobias the pig had his snout pushed through the paddock bars as if he could smell the diesel from the road.

Bramble stood at the far end of the field with her back to everyone. She had come from a farm past the Hollows at Michaelmas, and nobody in the village knew her age, only that a white ring marked one of her ears like a tally. Old Mr Pask knew the numbers on his clipboard and nothing else. Nell had sat up with her the winter the calf came early and dead, and had learnt that Bramble listened better than most people did.

When the driver climbed out and started up the path with his clipboard, Nell opened the gate to the spinney instead. The oaks there were older than the lane and older than the church roof. She walked Tobias in behind a bucket of windfall apples, carried the hens two at a time in a laundry basket, and Bramble came last of all, slow and unhurried, as if she had been waiting all morning for someone to ask her properly. The driver shouted her name twice, then stood by the stile, too unsure of the ground to follow.

In the morning Mr Pask found three faces drawn in chalk across the top gate, a cow in front and a pig and a hen tucked either side of her, with words underneath in Nell's careful capitals. The rain got at them by noon and softened the lines, but the lorry never came back down Marsh Lane.
