Pencil sketch of a pin-up woman with three bears and Just Right script in Neo-trad and lettering styles, drawn as a tattoo design.

Pin-up portrait with bears and Just Right script

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A graphite pencil drawing of a pin-up woman with curled, piled hair and winged eye makeup. Three cartoon bear cubs sit beneath the script words Just Right, and a cup or bottle held in her hand carries the word baby. The shading is soft and detailed on the face and hair, with bold outlines on the lettering, and the work is entirely black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cubs came down to the lane the week the frost broke, three of them jostling at the gate of Mrs Ashdown's orchard as though someone had sent them to fetch something. I was the one with the wheelbarrow and the bad temper, so the job of shooing them fell to me. Their mother had gone over the ridge in the snow and not come back, and nobody in Thornbury had mentioned the cubs since.

I had my sister's old feeding bottle in my apron pocket, the one with the cracked rubber teat she never got round to throwing out. I filled it with warm milk from the dairy at the bottom of the hill and crouched in the wet grass. The smallest cub wouldn't go near it. The biggest grabbed at it so fast it nearly took my thumb. I tested the milk on my wrist the way my mother used to for the baby, too cold, then too hot, and then, just right, and the middle one drank with its eyes shut and its ears flat as if it had been waiting all its life for exactly that temperature.

All spring they came down at dusk. The village fretted and locked its bins, and Mrs Ashdown put a sack of potatoes on her gate as a bribe. I kept on with the bottle, and the cubs grew heavy and clumsy, and then one evening the middle one simply stopped coming. I didn't go looking. Some things are better left to the trees.

In the morning the bottle was back on my doorstep, rinsed clean, its teat turned inside out and set neatly on the boot scraper, as if somebody had returned a favour.
