Tattooed animated princess with tiger in cameo frame

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Flash

An illustrated animated princess with dark hair in a low ponytail, wearing a teal jewelled headpiece and hoop earrings, sits within an oval cameo frame. A tattooed red and orange tiger covers her upper arm and shoulder, with a lotus flower and smaller white and teal motifs nearby, and her other hand is raised. Bold outlines and soft gradient shading are used throughout, with warm skin tones and teal and green accents against a pale background, and lotus flowers and a banner with Arabic script frame the lower edge.

Sit closer, and mind the lamp, for the oil in it is older than your mother. The sign-painter in the lane below the mosque had a tiger on his wall that nobody had ever seen him paint. Each dawn it was a little more striped and a little more hungry, and by the feast of the new moon it had leapt down onto the plaster and wanted feeding like a dog.

The painter's daughter, Rania, was the only one who could calm it. She carried a bowl of lotus seed sweetened with date syrup and set it at the edge of the pond behind the baker's, where the water lilies opened white at noon. The tiger ate, and while it ate she told it what the city had said about it that day, which was mostly nonsense, and the tiger listened as if she were a bell.

One afternoon the coppersmith's boy came running with a brass cup full of ink. "Your father has promised the tiger's shoulder to the caravan master," he said, "and the caravan master pays in gold." Rania went pale. She took the cup, dipped her fingers, and drew a lotus on the tiger's flank, then a line of letters beneath it that nobody in the lane could read but everybody could feel. The tiger lowered its head. It did not follow the caravan master. It went back to its wall and stayed there, striped and quiet, and when the painter came out at last he found his daughter asleep against its painted shoulder.

So when the caravan master came asking, the lane told him the tiger had gone to sleep, and for once the lane was not lying.
