Winged dragon line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A single-line drawing of a dragon with a long head, outstretched wings and a body that curls downwards. The strokes swell and taper like brush or ink marks, with bold lines for the wings and tail and finer detail for the head and claws. The drawing is in solid black on white, with the figure placed centrally and the tail sweeping down to the bottom left.

Brother Aldous had been told to keep the ink thin, because the abbot liked his margins quiet. He dipped the reed again anyway and let the stroke run long, the way the old scribes at Wenmouth had done before the fire took their library. The dragon on the vellum of the Psalter was meant to be a single capital D for David, but his hand kept wanting wings.

Those first strokes swelled and tapered the way a wave does against a sea wall, bold where the pressure sat and fine where the reed lifted. By vespers the beast had stretched across the lower margin, its neck bent back over the page like a question. Aldous set down his pen and found the ink had dried faster than it should, the blacks gone glossy as wet slate.

When he came back before dawn with a candle, the tail had moved. It swept now from the corner of the margin down toward the flagstones, curling in a slow loop, and its tip was marked with three claws he had not drawn. Somewhere below in the cloister the bell for matins was ringing, and beneath it he heard a wingbeat, a long dry sound like pages turning in a wind.

He did not tell the abbot. In the morning he added a small smear of gold at the throat, and the dragon, which had been staring at the window, turned its head to look at him instead.
