Pine forest and mandala on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm tattoo shows dark pine tree silhouettes rising from a solid black base, with a large shaded mandala-style flower pattern above them. A band of geometric scalloped pattern runs along the bottom edge. The image is split into three vertical panels of the same arm, with soft grey shading in the mandala and crisp black fills in the trees.

Dear Ruth,

I know you won't come to the reunion, so I am writing instead, which is what we did at the back of Miss Pryce's classroom when the rain got in. The Ferrier boys have bought the old sawmill and want it for a distillery, and they've cleared the lower slope of the glen down to stumps. What's left is the Scots pines up on the ridge, the ones we used to call the cathedral because the light came down through them in bars.
Last Thursday I walked up with the dog before my shift. The sun was still behind the hill, but the sky above the ridge had gone the colour of pearl, and the pines stood against it as black as cut paper. You remember the sun Mr Lowe drew on the board, the one with all the petals? It was like that. Every needle in that light lined up like a row of pews, and I stood there until the dog got bored and sat on my foot.
I don't know why I'm telling you this, except that you were always the one who wanted to climb to the top and see the whole valley. The trees are still there. Come home for a weekend, if only to be angry at the Ferriers with me. Bring the photographs from college, the ones of the bothy roof. I'll leave the back door unlocked.
Love, Isla
