Three pine trees on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three tall conifer trees of varying heights standing close together, with the tallest on the right. The branches are built up with feathered marks and dense shading that softens into a hazy base at the bottom of the trees. The work is in black and grey ink on a forearm, photographed against a dark background with a white top visible on the right.

Dear Mags,

The boats were late in again this morning, the Fenella pulling onto the slip with her net half empty and Davie swearing at the winch until the whole quay could hear him. I stood at the rail with a mug going cold and looked up past the harbour wall at the three pines on Cnoc Dubh, the tall one on the right and the two smaller ones leaning in as if they were having a word. You'd laugh. I told Skipper they look like a family waiting at a bus stop, and he said the bus stop is the sea and we're all of us stood in it.

The fog came down on Tuesday and didn't lift for two days. Nobody went out. I sat in the wheelhouse with the radio on low and the hiss of it, and at dusk the bottom of those trees dissolved into the grey, so the trunks seemed to stand on nothing at all. Jimmy Ross said that's how the old men used to paint them, fading into the ground so you couldn't tell where the forest stopped and the water began. I didn't believe him until I saw it with my own eyes.

Thursday the wind swung round and the fleet went out before first light. I watched them from the pier, lamps bobbing one after another past the point, and then I looked up and found the tallest pine black against a sky going pale. Something about that steadied me. Whatever weather comes in off the Minch, the three of them stay put.

Hold on to that for me. I'll be home for your birthday if the Fenella's engine holds, and if it doesn't, I'll walk.

Love, Eilidh
