Pine forest tattoo on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A tall central pine dominates a band of conifers that rise along the calf, with smaller trees fading into the background. The shading is soft and dense in dark grey and black, with lighter greys giving depth to the distant trees. A reddish wash behind the upper trees and a dark trunk base anchor the composition against a plain background.

You reach the top of the pass when the light has already gone grey on the far side, and the wind comes up the scree carrying the smell of resin and wet bark. Your grandfather's compass is in your coat pocket, its glass cracked across the north point. Below you the conifers climb the glen in ranks, dark as ink, and in the middle of them stands the one he called the Bishop, taller than the rest by a full man's height.

The blue cross on its trunk is still fresh. The contractor's man left it three days ago with a clipboard and an apology, and you have spent every evening since pretending the paint will weather off. You pick your way down through the heather with a torch you do not switch on, because the moon is enough over the water and because you know the path by the feel of the stones.

By the time you reach the Bishop the mist has filled the glen to the second branch. You sit with your back to the trunk, the bark rough through your jacket, and listen to the saw that is not yet running. Somewhere below a dog barks twice and stops. You think about the surveyor who measured this valley in 1952 and wrote that the ground would hold nothing but trees, and how little he understood about holding.

At first light the mist pulls back like a sheet off a table and the other pines come out one after another, grey then green, standing close around the Bishop as if they had walked down the hill to wait with it. You stand, brush the needles from your sleeves, and take the cold tin of paint from the bag. You do not go looking for the saw man. You work the lid loose with your thumbnail, and you start to scrape.
