The mapmaker from Llanberis came up the lane again on Tuesday with his tripod and his hat half blown off, and he stood in our top field for two hours insisting the three peaks above the quarry road were not the same height. I told him they were the same height to anyone who had carried a hay bale up that slope. He wrote something in his book and went away unconvinced, which is how most arguments with surveyors end.
I have kept the sketch you left on the dresser, the one you did the night before the boat. Your outlines were always too nervous, going over the ridge twice as if it might leave. You shaded the faces that turn from the sun with the side of your pencil, grey and soft, and you wrote underneath it "Mam's three, not the Sisters." She laughed at that until she coughed.
Mam is buried under the middle one now, so the mapmaker's mistake doesn't trouble her. I went up on Sunday with the good knife and cut the first Bramley off the tree you planted. It is the size of your fist and so sour it makes your eyes water. I left half on the stone and carried the rest down in my coat, the way you used to.
