Pine tree inside a geometric diamond outline
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a pine tree with dense, ragged black foliage and a pale trunk, set diagonally on a white background. Thin straight lines form a tall diamond and an inner rectangle that overlap the tree, with the lines meeting at the top and bottom points. The image is entirely black ink on white, with the tree shaded in solid marks and the frame drawn in fine single lines.

Tuesday, and the wind has finally dropped enough for me to get the theodolite level on the ridge above Glen Tarra. Mr Pryce from the estate wants every Scots pine on the north slope counted and boxed before the felling crews arrive in March, and he has given me a fortnight and a ledger with no column for regret.

The tree I chose is the one at the bend, near ninety feet of it, its crown ragged where the weather has taken its bites. I drove pegs at the foot, sighted the crown and the root, and drew the lines on my board: a tall lozenge tapering to a point at the base and another at the top, with a square fitted inside to show where the timber would square off. Mrs Vanterpool, who keeps the inn at the bottom of the track, came up with tea and asked what a diamond was for. I told her it was for keeping things in their proper measure.
I could not say why the sketch pleased me more than the figures. The trunk leans exactly as the lines do, as if the frame had been drawn around something already trying to stand within it. I shaded the foliage with a wet brush, and the ink bled where the needles were thickest, so the tree came out looser than the pencil around it.
When I rolled up the board, a crow had landed on the lowest peg and was tugging at the twine. I let it have the twine. Pryce will get his count and his box, and the tree will stand a while longer inside the lines I gave it, which is more than most things get from a surveyor.
