Marta counted the peaks every morning from the step of the goat house, the way her mother had, and her mother's mother before the road was cut. Nine humps ran down the hill from the grey crag above the pass to the bend where the stream turned south. Each had a name. The first was Old Hat, the second Little Sister, and the ninth, which dipped lowest, was called Mercy, because it was the last shape a walker could see before the valley took them.

Teodor, the salt carter's son, came up the track one autumn wanting to cross to the far side before snow. Marta gave him a heel of bread and a coil of rope. He said the peaks were only rock. She told him that every one of them kept a shadow on its shoulder, and that the shadow was where the mountain hid its breath. He laughed and went up anyway, with the rope over his arm and the wind at his back.

He did not come down by dark. In the morning Marta climbed to Little Sister and found his cap hung on a stake of juniper. Beneath it someone had scratched seven strokes into the shale, and no more. Then the cloud lifted, and far off she saw a small figure picking its way down Mercy with a sack on its back, the thin sun on its shoulders.

After that she walked the ridge with him in her mind, one peak at a time. When she reached the ninth from the goat house each morning, she said the count aloud, softly, the way you would call a child in from the yard.
