Pine tree on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall pine tree is tattooed along the forearm, drawn as a dark silhouette with a tapered trunk and layered, feathered branches at the top. The ink is solid black and grey with soft edges where it fades slightly, and a bright lens flare crosses the tattoo. The composition is a close, shallow-focus shot of the forearm and wrist against a blurred, sunlit landscape, with a dark sleeve at the top and a striped woven bracelet at the wrist.

The pine stood on the ridge where the two valleys met, and the men who kept the border said the first man to lie about where the line ran had planted it. Every spring the carters came up the track with their mules and sealed bags, and every spring they stopped beneath its branches to say which side they were on.

Hedda Marr kept the tollhouse below it for thirty winters. She had one rule: a traveller could cross if they could name the tree's shadow at noon. Most could not. The shadow fell long and thin across the stones, tapering down the slope like a trunk drawn with a single stroke, and the feathered tips seemed to lift in the wind even when the air was still.
One October a boy came up from the lowland with a bundle of letters and no mule. He said he was carrying word of his mother's death to her sister in the high village. Hedda asked him the shadow. He looked up into the low sun, squinting, and said it pointed at the church spire on the far side. That was true only in the afternoon. She let him through anyway, because he had got the hour wrong the way people do after walking all night.
At the crest the sun slid behind the branches, and a bright green light broke through the needles and ran across the stones like water poured from a jug. The boy stopped and turned back, not toward the tollhouse but toward the tree, as if it were the one thing on the ridge he had been told the truth about.
