Pine trees in a dotwork circle on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three conifer silhouettes in solid black in the foreground, set against a circle of fine stippled dots with faint mountain peaks inside. The solid trees contrast with the dotted shading of the circle, which fades toward its edges. The design is in black ink on a light-skinned upper arm, with a plain pale blue background.

The seedlings went into the ground on the north slope of Caddon Fell in the third week of March, when frost still lay in the hollows and the peat smelt of cold iron. Dougie Pryce carried the bundles up in a sack on his back and counted them out loud, though the only things listening were the sheep and the wind. Four hundred and twelve Scots pine, bare-rooted, tied with twine gone soft in the damp.

Mum had planted the first of them the year I was born, and her ledger still sat in the cab of the Land Rover with a coffee ring on the cover. On the back page she drew each plot as a circle, inked the ridgeline in as peaks, then dotted the rest of the sky so the pencil wouldn't smudge when she licked her thumb. I thought it was fussy. She said a map should show how a place feels, not just where the fences run.

By the fourth afternoon the wind had swung round and the trees I'd set on the lower bank were leaning the wrong way. I knelt in the bracken and pressed each one upright with my knee while rain came sideways off the Tweed valley. That evening the ledger was soaked through, the ink bleeding into the dots until the circle looked like a moon seen through milk.

In May I walked back up with the ledger under my arm. Most of the seedlings had held. Inside the drawn circle I could see the first green tips, three of them standing a head above the heather, dark against the grey hill. I took out a pencil, drew the same shape on a clean page, and sat on a wet stone stippling the sky one small dot at a time until the light went.
