Pine trees and lake in a circle on an arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows a lake framed by tall pine trees on the right, with layered mountains behind and a pale, shaded sky above. The image is built from fine stippled dots and soft grey gradients, with the darkest tones in the trees and shoreline. The composition sits centred on the upper arm against plain, light skin, with a striped top and dark clothing at the edge of the frame.

Snow has been falling on the Hollin Inn since Tuesday, and the lake below has turned the colour of pewter. You carry the coal scuttle up the back stairs because Mrs Ferrier's hip won't let her, and you find the attic guest, a surveyor called Tobias Greave, hunched over a sheet of card with a fine-nibbed pen, making dots. Not lines. Only dots.

"It takes forever," he says, without looking up. "Every speck is a decision." He shows you the tall pine he has set on the right edge, the lake left as a bare pale oval, the mountains behind it faint as breath on glass. "You could just draw a line," you say. "Lines lie," he says. "Dots only pile up until something looks true."
Outside, the snow is so thick you can't make out the lake at all. Then the wind drops for a moment and there it is, grey on grey, the pine black on the shore exactly where he put it. He drew it from the window in August, he tells you, before the road closed, and he has been trying to make the winter agree with the summer ever since.
He asks you to hold the lamp steady. You do. The dots fall onto the card in the same slow rhythm as the snow against the pane, and by the time the bells in the valley ring two, the circle is finished. Nothing is missing from it, not even the cold. Tobias blows the dust from the paper and, for the first time all week, smiles at the window.
