Pine tree in a circle on a calf
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black pine or fir tree silhouette sits inside a thin circle, with its long trunk extending downward and fading out toward the ankle. The tree is filled with bold black ink and the trunk tapers to a fine point, with no greys or colour. The photograph is taken from behind the leg against a pale green tiled hallway floor, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

By the time the frost had taken the bottom field, Mrs Ada Penrose had stopped asking the men of Hollin Dale when they would plant the north slope. They had planted it in the spring, all forty acres, and every sapling had browned by the first thaw. Only the old pine by the chapel wall stayed green, and nobody in the village would say a word against it.

Her grandson Walter went up the hill the week after the sheep were sold. He carried a spade, a heel of bread and a tin of tar, and he came back at dusk with his coat torn and a sack that moved. Inside was a young fir no taller than a hymnbook, its roots wrapped in wet moss. He would not say where he had found it. He only said the ground up there had been waiting for someone to ask.
He planted it at the low end of the chapel field, where the water pooled after rain, and he dug the hole so deep that the vicar came out to ask whether he meant to reach the other side. Every evening for a month Walter knelt beside it with a bucket. The village laughed, then stopped laughing, because the sapling did not wilt. By midsummer its crown had pushed above the chapel roof, and its shadow lay long across the lane towards the sea.
When Walter died, a ring of grey stones was found around the trunk, set edge to edge the way a child draws the sun. Nobody moved them. The tree still stands, and its roots have drunk the bottom field dry, so that nothing grows there now but the fir, straight and narrow, pointing the way the road runs when a person is meant to leave.
