Pineapple and eye design on an embroidered patch
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
An oval embroidered patch shows a pineapple with a leafy crown above a halved pineapple base, with an eye at its centre and small droplets on either side. The design uses bold black outlines, grey shading on the fruit and a white background within the border. It is centred against a plain light grey backdrop.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's only got one more good log in it. You want the tale of Mabel Grice and the pineapple that saw everything. The Tallow & Vane travelling show had been dying for three winters by then, the lions gone to a sanctuary in Wales, the big top patched so often it looked like a quilt. Mabel ran the fruit stall at the back, mostly because nobody else would touch the bruised stock the grocer sold her cheap.

One wet October she split a pineapple on the chopping board and the juice went everywhere, spitting off the blade like it was angry. She swore, wiped her hands on her apron, and looked down. There in the cut heart of the fruit, sitting neat as a coin, was an eye. Brown, wet, and wide awake. It blinked at her. Then it looked past her shoulder at the empty ring, the sawdust, the painted horses under their tarpaulin, and it wept a single bead of juice down the rind.
Now you'll ask what it wanted. Mabel asked it too, and the eye said nothing, which is the way of eyes, but it kept watching the ring. So on the last night of the season she dragged the old wooden crate of crowns out into the centre and set the pineapple on top, and she did what she'd seen the ringmaster do a thousand times. She cracked her whip at nothing and waited.
And the show came back, just for the length of one cold song. The horses shook their manes and the drums started up beneath the cloth, and the eye on the pineapple blinked slow, once, like a man closing a ledger. Then the lamps went out. In the morning the ground was bare, and Mabel had a fresh pineapple on her board with no eye in it at all, only a pale green crown that smelled, mind you, faintly of sawdust. Now who's for the last of the ginger cake?
