Pistol with pink bow on hip

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of a grey handgun with a pink ribbon bow tied around the slide. The grip has engraved scroll detailing, with soft grey shading and bold dark outlines. Pink is used only for the bow, set against greyscale metal on bare skin beside a navel piercing and a pink garment.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The thing about a deactivated pistol is that it weighs exactly what it weighed when it could still do harm, and my brother Tony never got used to that. He kept it in a biscuit tin under the stairs for thirty years, until the week before Shelley's wedding, when she rang me from the hall and said she wanted it on the top table.

Nobody argued with the bride that spring. Shelley took it to a jeweller in Hessle who engraved watch cases, and he worked scrollwork up the grip in fine lines, little leaves and a curl like a ribbon that never got tied. Then she bought a length of pink satin from the market, the exact shade of the bridesmaids' dresses, and knotted it round the slide so the bow sat on top like a cake topper.

At the reception the guests kept picking it up, pretending it was a joke and then holding it longer than they meant to. Tony, who had carried the real one on night shifts in 1979, stood by the window and said nothing. When he gave his speech he only said the gun had been his and the bow was hers, and that from now on the two of them could share a drawer.

Later, when the chairs were stacked and the satin had come loose, I found Shelley alone with the pistol in her lap, picking at the knot with a fingernail. She looked up and said, 'It's just a bit of metal now,' and tied the bow back on.
